HSTR Bare Lamp Output, 15′ Cable

HSTR Bare Lamp Output is a bare end and S-style male plug.

A ballast is an electrical control unit that regulates and distributes power to fluorescent lights. Usually hidden from view, the ballast is installed inside an overhead fluorescent light unit, and is covered by a shield or plate. A worn out ballast must be replaced, as it can cause dangerous shorts or electrical spikes. It can also cause fluorescent tubes to burn out prematurely. There are many types of ballasts, but the simplest one is usually found in two-tube light fixtures. The ballast has a hot and neutral wire at one end to receive power, and two blue wires a red one at the other end to supply power to the lights.

How to Wire a Two-Wire Ballast:

  1. Turn off the circuit breaker
  2. Remove the clear plastic cover from the light fixture and expose the fluorescent tubes.
  3. Remove the light fixture’s inner cover plate
  4. Verify that there is no voltage
  5. Unscrew the wire nuts connecting the wires, then separate the wires. Unscrew the screws securing the ballast to the light fixture, then remove the ballast
  6. Strip approximately 1/2-inch from the ends of each of the wires on the new ballast
  7. Connect the wires from the ballast to the light fixture in the following manner: connect the blue wires from the ballast to blue wires from the light fixture; black ballast wire to building’s black (hot) wire; white ballast wire to building’s white (neutral) wire; red ballast wire to both red wires of the light fixture. Make the connections by putting the ends of the wires to be connected together, then screwing a wire nut onto the exposed bare copper.
  8. Re-install the inner cover plate, light bulbs and clear plastic cover.
